Power you use, not power you buy

Every unit your turbine makes and you use on site is a unit you don't buy from the grid. For farms and businesses with steady, year-round electricity use, that adds up to a large cut in your power bills.

Any spare power can be exported to the grid through the Smart Export Guarantee. Every site is different, so we'll work out your expected generation and savings during a site visit.

Two sizes to suit your site

The KW30 is the bigger of the two, built for windy sites with high on-site electricity use. The KW20 suits smaller farms and businesses that use less power, or sites where a lower 20 metre tower works better for planning. Both are built on the same design, with the same features and servicing.

Built to keep running with less maintenance

Kodair has been designing small wind turbines in Ireland since 2006. The KW20 and KW30 share the same features, which keep them generating and keep servicing simple.

No gearboxA direct-drive permanent magnet generator means fewer parts to wear out and less noise.
Blades that adjust themselvesVariable pitch sets the blade angle for the wind speed, and a motorised yaw keeps it facing the wind.
Backup safety systemIf the pitch system ever fails, a separate system parks the blades to protect the turbine.
Automatic lubricationKeeps moving parts greased between visits, which is why it only needs servicing every 3 years.
Tilt-down towerThe tower lowers with hydraulic rams for installation and major services, with ladder access for routine work.
Remote monitoringYou can check your turbine's performance online, and so can we.

Replacing an old Proven, C&F or West Wind turbine

If your existing turbine is reaching the end of its life, we can take it down, remove the old foundation, put in a new base and install a Kodair KW20 or KW30 in its place, depending on your site and power use.

If your old turbine is on the feed-in tariff, you may be able to keep those payments for the years left after replacing it. Try the calculator further down this page to see what that could be worth.

We also service and repair Proven, C&F, West Wind and other small wind turbines, so we can give you honest advice on whether to repair or replace.

Questions

Are Kodair turbines independently certified?

Yes. Both the KW20 and KW30 are certified by the Small Wind Certification Council, and were the first turbines certified to the latest small wind turbine standard. They also completed independent testing, and their power curves are independently verified, so expected generation can be predicted with confidence.

Is there still a feed-in tariff?

The feed-in tariff closed to new turbines in 2019, so a brand new site is paid for exported power through the Smart Export Guarantee instead. That's why the Kodair gives the best value when most of its power is used on site.

Can I keep my feed-in tariff if I replace my old turbine?

Often, yes. Since Ofgem changed its rules in 2021, an accredited turbine can usually be replaced without losing its feed-in tariff for the years left. If the new turbine is bigger than the old one, FiT is paid on a share of the generation. Ofgem looks at each case individually, so we'll help you check with your FiT supplier before any work starts.

Should I choose the KW20 or KW30?

It depends on your wind, how much power you use and any planning limits on height. The KW30 makes more power, so it usually suits windier sites with high electricity use. The KW20 suits smaller users or sites where a lower tower is preferred. Try both in the calculator below, and we'll recommend the right one after a site visit.

Do you cover my area?

Yes. We're based in the northeast of Scotland and install and service turbines across the UK, from Aberdeenshire to Cornwall.

How often does a Kodair need servicing?

Every 3 years. At the 3-year service, our engineers climb the tower by ladder to service the turbine in place. At the 6-year service, the turbine is lowered to the ground using hydraulic rams, so it can be serviced fully at ground level.

Who services the turbine after it's installed?

We do. As the UK agent, we handle all Kodair servicing and repairs to keep your turbine generating.

The lower figure uses Kodair's independently certified annual energy figures (SWCC-22-03 for the KW30, SWCC-22-02 for the KW20), less 5% for downtime. KW20 figures at speeds other than 6 m/s are estimated from its certified results. The higher figure is based on how our own KW30 installs perform: one site with a 6 m/s average makes around 100,000 units a year. Feed-in tariff figures don't include yearly inflation rises, and keeping your FiT after a replacement must be confirmed with your FiT supplier and Ofgem. Real production depends on your site, so treat this as a guide. We'll give you proper figures after a site visit.
